About

Welcome to my blog revolving around my trials and tribulations as a graduate student who is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in History and Migration and Ethnic Relations at the University of Western Ontario. You will find all kinds of things on this blog including personal thoughts, my academic research, updates on courses, any interesting articles I have read, current events, songs I am currently in love with and anything else I feel like sharing :)

The majority of the content will be specifically related to my thesis project titled, "Gifts from Amin": The Resettlement, Integration, and Identity of Ugandan Asian Refugees in Canada. The project focuses on the resettlement and integration of Ugandan Asian refugees that came to Canada between 1972 and 1974.

This was the first major resettlement of non-European and non-white refugees to Canada by 1974. As a whole, approximately 8,000 Ugandans of South Asian decent who were expelled from their homes by President and Major General Idi Amin, were resettled in Canada. The rapid response of the Pierre Elliot Trudeau government in partnership with the Aga Khan initiated this resettlement initiative in Canada which not only brought thousands of refugees to Canada but also my mother and her family. Using a variety of archival material along with several oral histories and interviews with actual refugees who have been in Canada for more than 40 years. The dissertation explores how the Canadian government facilitated their resettlement and integration while also including the voices of Ugandan Asian refugees who recount their experiences of life in Canada. This is all encapsulated in the Adventures from the Archives Series
